From the Muirlands to Hermosa and from the Farms to the Shores, La Jolla residents
live in a variety of residential areas that extend over its 7,000 acres. Although
best known for
its superior beach and the famous red-roofed Beach and Tennis Club, La Jolla Shores
is a neighborhood that seems almost a community unto itself. It originally consisted of
only a few homes scattered on the flatland behind the beach, but it has filled in solidly
with homes spreading up the slope along both sides of La Jolla Shores Drive.
Within approximately five acres along both sides of Avenida de la Playa is a charming
neighborhood business area of specialty shops and professional offices. The small lots,
low roof lines, colorful plantings and varied building styles that display wood and other
natural materials all contribute to the unique and pleasing character of the Shores.
Although planned as a small neighborhood facility to accommodate the needs of
area residents, the center of the Shores now houses one of southern California's finest
restaurants and thus welcomes an extended community of visitors.
