Coast Boulevard extends along the shoreline and provides one of La Jolla's most scenic
promenades. Dotted with natural points of interest such as the Cove, Scripps Park and
the Children's Pool, Coast Boulevard attracts strollers, joggers, sunset worshippers and
even daredevil climbers who spider the rough face of People's Wall. Serious collectors
also vow that the crannies between the rocks where Coast Boulevard meets the sea
is one of the choicest spots for finding small shells and sea glass.
Coast Boulevard begins at the Cove and Shell Shop from where 133 steps lead down
a man-made tunnel to the main chamber of Sunny Jim Cove and the bluff overlooking
La Jolla Bay its incomparable views and convenient access to both beach and village
made Coast Boulevard the site of many "La Jolla originals." Two red cottages facing
the Cove, built in 1894 and affectionately known as Red Rest and Red Roost, represent
the few remaining architectural treasures that still stand. In contrast, the monumental
"939" is a seventeen-story symbol of the struggle between old and new, which resulted
in a fifty-foot height limitation on all new construction.
