Tennis, golf and swimming are perhaps the sports in which La Jolla residents participate
the most. Private clubs, such as the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club and the La Jolla
Country Club, provide excellent instruction and facilities for participation in these sports.
Although its first cornerstone was laid in 1927, it was not until 1935 that the foresighted
newspaper magnate Frederick William Kellogg purchased and began to develop La
Jolla's Beach and Tennis Club. Today, on twenty luxuriously landscaped acres along
La Jolla Shores, its members enjoy a nine-hole pitch-and-put course, an outdoor, heated
freshwater championship pool, twelve of the nation's finest tennis courts, the best white-
sand beach along the coast, dining and dancing in beautiful, palm-fringed patios,
superbly appointed apartments and many other facilities. The La Jolla Beach and Tennis
Club is ranked among the finest private clubs in the United States.
With its charming duck pond, stately Washington palms, romantic archways and perennial
profusion of flowers, the Beach and Tennis Club continues to thrive as the social and
family heart of now third and fourth generation La Jollans.
