Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation is among the oldest and largest private research
institutions in the United States. Remarkable research laboratories, a major hospital and
a sophisticated outpatient facility are housed within a single, modern, five-acre complex
on the Torrey Pines mesa.
Displaying her characteristic foresight, philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps predicted
that the emerging science of biochemistry was destined to transform the entire field
of medicine. With her impetus and funds, a small, single-story facility on Prospect Street
opened its doors in 1924. Known as the Scripps Metabolic Clinic, and staffed by seven
professionals, the modest facility offered special diagnostic services and conducted
some research, primarily in diabetes.
In its sixty-three-year history, the single-specialty Clinic has become on internationally
renown healthcare and biochemical research institution with more than 4,000 employees
in twelve locations throughout San Diego County, with expertise spanning over fifty
fields of medicine and surgery. In an effort to maintain high standards of excellence,
Scripps Clinic attracts thousands of clinicians and scientists from all corners of the
world who participate each year in more than 1,250 seminars and symposiums.
La Jolla is proud to boast some of the world's most important science and research
facilities, which from often humble beginnings have successfully emerged to preserve
the quality of life and have ultimately improved the human condition.
