La Jolla's benign year-round climate and spectacular natural setting make it a sportsman's paradise.
Since its earliest days, La Jolla has been a spawning ground for athletes
of virtually every sport some of whom have achieved accomplishments of national
acclaim.
Records indicate that early La Jolla residents were putting the green as far back as
1899 on a course running along Prospect. Today the eighteen-hole championship course
on the cliffs overlooking the ocean that has been ranked among the best public courses
in the country and the equal of Carmel's famed Pebble Beach. Torrey Pines is host to
the annual Andy Williams Open, which dates back to 1952 and has attracted such world
champions as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Johnny Miller. The exacting
four-day Open attracts not only the world's top golfers, but thousands of enthusiastic
spectators and hundreds of members of the international press. The prestigious sporting
event is nationally telecast bringing La Jolla and its mild February weather to
everyone's attention.
Many giants of the game have been born and nurtured here, often teeing off
as toddlers with their dads at the picturesque La Jolla Country Club course.
