Muirlands Middle School has approximately 1000 students attending the grades 6-8 middle school program. The school is located in the heart of La Jolla and next to La Jolla High School. The high standards set by La Jolla High School are recognized by these middle school students. Forty two percent of the students participate in the gifted and talented (GATE) program. There is also a special education program to help children with specific learning difficulties.

The school has monthly recognition assemblies to encourage students by recognizing academic improvements, high achievements, and good citizenship. Muirlands Middle School offers an exceptional educational field trip program. Trips are held annually and include a sixth grade camp for all sixth graders, a Yosemite Valley environmental science trip, and an East Coast history trip.

A caring and stimulating educational environment is provided by the staff (of which over half have master's degrees in education and related fields) and by strong parent and community involvement.
